4 types of winter pool covers
Most homeowners think of a pool cover as method of just winterizing their pool. This is true but do you know the differences in the benefits and costs associated in the different types of covers. The Pool Doctor can help you purchase and install all 4 different types of covers.
Let’s look at 4 different types of pools covers and discuss the Pro’s and Con’s of each.
Standard winter cover
This cover is inexpensive and does a nice job of keeping out sunlight and debris if installed properly. The problem is they only last a couple of years and are not safety covers. They will hold very little weight. An animal, child, or even snow can pull these covers in the pool and can be quite dangerous. They are also not the most attractive to look at all winter long.
Safety Mesh Anchor winter cover
This cover is a safety cover and will keep debris out of your pool and can be walked on while holding a heavy snow load as they are anchored to the concrete with a spring tensioner. They are light weight, easy to clean and do not require a cover pump to pump off rain water. The problem is they allow sunlight and rain through which causes algae growth and you will have a green pool come spring. Sometimes you may have to pump the pool water down during the winter months to keep the pool from overflowing and causing other damage to your pool.
Solid Anchor winter cover
This is also a safety cover that will keep debris, water, sunlight, pets and children out of your pool. This is the most popular type of cover in Southern Indiana. This cover is also anchored to the concrete with a rubber strap and do to need have an automatic pool cover pump placed on them all winter to keep the water off of them. The problem is they are heavy and difficult to clean. The best thing using a Solid Anchor winter cover is your pool will open as it looked when you closed it assuming your chemical balance was correct, and pool was cleaned before closing.
Automatic Pool Covers
This is the safest option that does all of the above safety covers and more. The best thing is it is used all year long and is open and closed at the push of a button. They will help with water evaporation, less chemical usage, heat retention, cleanliness, but most important safety as these covers will take a very heavy load. In Indiana they are recognized as a pool barrier therefore you don’t have to install a fence. They can be installed on most pools as a retrofit by The Pool Doctor’s cover team Tri-State Pool Covers. The problem is they are expensive, you do have to keep the water pumped off with an automatic pool cover pump all season, and they will need to have the vinyl fabric replaced every 5 to 7 years. Once you have a pool with an Automatic Pool Cover you wonder how you ever got by without one.
